Aethersea Development Blog Week 1

Welcome to my development blog for Aethersea, a game I'm developing from scratch as part of my Portfolio Development module. The aim for this product is to produce a functional prototype for an exploration focused isometric RPG inspired thematically by Steampunk aesthetics, and mechanically by the Fallout and Baldur's Gate Series.

Main Outline

Aethersea is set in a world where Victorian era civilisations have jumped dramatically forward in technological capability, and have taken to the skies aboard city sized ships named Platforms. The player takes on the role of an Aethersea Voyager, owner of a venerable Airship they can use to explore the strange Wandering Isles of the Aethersea, trade products and materials between the Platforms, and even hunt other Voyagers as a pirate. Interact with potential Officers to improve your relationships and unlock new bonuses, and uncover a mysterious plot that threatens all the Platforms!

Mechanically, the player will explore the world via a 3d isometric landscape, and talk to various characters with a set of dialogue options that could improve or hinder your relationships. While sailing the Aethersea, you can be attacked by monsters, pirates, and even the forces of the Platforms should you anger them enough.

When attacked, the player takes control of their airship, and enters turn-based combat. Here, the player will be able to select between various attacks and secondary systems, in an attempt to lower the opposing ships Crew or Structure stats to 0 before they are destroyed. When exploring unknown areas, like the Wandering Isles, the player selects 2 officers to accompany them. Here, monsters and other foes can attack the player's crew, switching to a more traditional turn-based RPG combat system. Both the ship and officers can be outfitted with gear and upgrades that will assist both in and out of combat, letting the player make their ship their own.
